Yes, horses are inherently designed for winter, and the associated cold temperatures in our wintery States.
Horses handle the cold environment of winter far better than us humans do. As winter sets in, horses in our part of the country grow a new, longer hair coat. This “winter coat” contains oils that repel moisture. Snow will freeze on the outer surface of the hair, without ever reaching the horse’s skin. Horses in extreme wet/freezing situations can require shelter or even a blanket, especially wet newborn foals.
Horse’s feet, lower legs, and hooves are designed to handle cold without freezing and without chilling the rest of the body, allowing it to stand in deep snow and not suffer frostbite.
When your looking for Horse and Livestock property, shelter or stables are a definite plus.
