Assuming you have done your pre-winter preparations, and those below zero temps are testing your home, it’s time to take another tour of your home to see how well your winterizing is working. Not to mention being prepared for big storms, heavy snowfall, below-zero weather, and power outages in general—particularly important in Rural situations.

1. Keep the Furnace filter changed for maximum furnace efficiency
2. Check Windows and Doors for that cold air sneaking through and seal those previously unforeseen gaps (caulk and weather stripping) and consider window kits with Plastic coverings
3. Upgrade your Thermostat to a programmable system to help trim heating costs while the home is empty
4. Use that wood Fireplace to stay cozy and offset heating Utility costs
5. Battery-powered flashlights or lanterns and extra batteries
6. Drinking and/or bottled water
7. Nonperishable food items. Keep the pantry stocked with groceries all winter long
8. Extra blankets, sleeping bags and warm winter coats
9. Phone numbers for your utility companies
10. Portable charger and/or Solar Charger for your cell phone
11. A battery-powered radio, with extra batteries, for listening to local emergency instructions
